    Defining Fourth Year Math Courses for Two Math Pathways in Louisiana High Schools

    While Louisiana has long offered students a variety of fourth-year math classes to choose from depending on their academic and career goals and interests, most courses did not have a consistent state-wide description. This session will discuss the process used to develop a common understanding and guidance for two of these courses.

    A New Vision: Creating Opportunities Through a Student-Centered Approach in Middle School Mathematics

    Dive into The Opportunity Myth and explore how Pflugerville ISD created and transformed middle school math instruction, flipping the script on traditional teaching approaches. Leaders transformed middle school math instruction through a commitment to providing equitable access for historically underrepresented students, expanding from a mid-size pilot to a district-wide initiative supported by data-driven decision-making. The outcome was higher student achievement and engagement and increased teacher capacity around pedagogy, instruction, and math content knowledge.

    Disrupting the Status Quo through Collective Action

    How might we ensure that every student has access to high-quality mathematics education during their transition from high school to post-secondary that’s relevant to their future? These tools and protocols were developed by representatives of the Launch Years Math Organization Leadership Network (LY-MathLN) in collaboration with math ed leaders across the 22 Launch Years states.

    Expanding Mathematics Pathways: Empowering Students to Achieve their Aspirations

    Many states are expanding math pathways, which provide an opportunity for students to take math courses aligned with their aspirations. In order to support leaders with successful implementation of new pathways, the Dana Center is working alongside experts throughout the country to develop course frameworks for Data Science, Statistics, and Integrated Statistics and Quantitative Reasoning. This session will explore the frameworks and discuss potential implementation of these rigorous and relevant mathematics courses.

    Discussion Mapping as a Tool for Engaging in Bold Equity-centered Coaching Conversations

    Engaging in coaching conversations around equitable practices is critical to ensuring all students have access to rigorous mathematics instruction. Discussion mapping is a high-leverage tool that helps coaches broach these conversations by providing teachers real-time, concrete feedback on who is engaging in mathematical discussions and to what extent, surfacing inequities. This feedback prompts teacher reflection, opening the door to co-construction of equity-centered coaching goals and identification of actionable steps towards instruction supportive of all learners.

    Launch Years Initiative: State Progress Highlights in High School Math Pathways

    Twenty-two states have joined the Dana Center’s Launch Years Initiative, working to scale math pathways from high school through postsecondary education and align math course taking to students’ goals and aspirations. In this session, we will highlight work from several states, share lessons learned, challenges faced, and ideas to improve equitable outcomes for students in your district or state.

    Understanding and Building STEM Identities: Illuminating Educator and Student Brilliance

    Do your students hold stereotypical beliefs about who belongs in STEM? In this session, we will work with a free resource to better understand our own STEM identities and then consider how this can inform beliefs about learning. Through engaging discussion and exploration, we will develop specific steps to more proactively develop our STEM identity and to promote positive STEM identities for our students so we can truly shine a light on the diverse and powerful brilliance of all students.
