Renewing Introductory Mathematics
“What are the important mathematical themes in the first two years [of college] and how can we teach those themes in a way that empowers students and encourages them to employ mathematics when studying problems in any area?”
These are just a few of the questions explored in a recently concluded series of articles featured in MAA FOCUS, the official newsmagazine of the Mathematical Association of America.
Michael Oehrtman, Dana Center Mathematics Pathways Leadership Fellow and Professor of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University, concludes the nine-article series by surveying the principles and challenges that characterize the burgeoning, nationwide mathematics pathways movement. Along the way, Oehrtman explores the role of College Algebra, accelerated and co-requisite models of developmental education, and pedagogy.
