Dana Center Managing Director Carolyn Landel Joins Smithsonian Science Education Center’s Higher Education Advisory Group

The Smithsonian Science Education Center has invited Dana Center managing director Carolyn Landel to join its Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Higher Education.

“The Smithsonian Science Education Center has been a model and a national leader in advancing K–12 science education at scale,” said Carolyn. “I have long admired the quality of their work, the breadth of their engagement with other partners, and their willingness to stay the course to make sustainable change over time for all students. I am honored to be asked to serve.”

With a mission of transforming the teaching and learning of science in the United States and throughout the world, the SSEC is the only unit of the Smithsonian Institution that is dedicated solely to formal K–12 science education reform.

The Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Higher Education will advise SSEC on potential models for collaboration between higher education and SSEC to improve student engagement and achievement in science in our nation’s K–12 school system.

“I am looking forward to our conversations in the SSEC advisory group,” said Carolyn. “Our shared passion and know-how about effective science education should lead to exciting new connections and innovations to provide a best-in-class science education for all students.”

The Dana Center has worked in K–12 science education since the mid-1990s, when it expanded its work from a focus on gateway mathematics courses in higher education to systemic reform of the K–12 education system, particularly mathematics and science education. Today the Center’s science education staff develop and deliver resources and professional development for K–12 science teachers in Texas and across the nation.
